Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five in which he enjoyed gambling on various card games at a young age. He found himself getting very aggressive in the above-mentioned card games while competing against his dad. After finishing high school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a bit and moved to New York to play some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s first two years were rough as he would play countless hours and don’t win most times. He made some extra money by becoming an runner for the poker players. He theorized he possibly could boost his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He made an attempt to get more rest and focus attention even more on poker.

The definite improvement in his game began when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest gamblers would often challenge each other. Howard was able to access several of the best minds in chess. With their help, he would sharpen his strategic thinking abilities. Howard applied these strategic ideas to the game of NL holdem.

Howard also assisted his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie was an excellent student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Sin City and play in the WSOP competition. Annie Duke is one of the greatest female players the poker world ever. He headed to Vegas in 1993 and played money games for the next decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he made the decision to play more tournaments.
