Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he enjoyed betting on various card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming really competitive in these particular card games as he was playing his father. After graduating from secondary school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little while and headed to New York to participate in some formidable chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial two years were difficult as he played countless hours and don’t win most times. The real advancement in his skills began when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable players would frequently challenge one another. He had access into several of the best players in chess. With their help, he would hone his strategic thinking skills. Howard applied these strategic concepts to the game of No-Limit hold’em.
He also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was an excellent student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct choice. Howard Lederer told Annie to move out to Vegas and play in the WSOP competition. Annie Duke is one of the greatest women players the poker arena ever. Howard Lederer headed to Las Vegas in 1993 and participated in money games for the successive decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, he decided to play more tournaments.
