Omaha Hi-Lo: General Outline

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but favored poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible variation, has increased in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha 8 or better begins just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A round of betting ensues in which players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is known as the flop. A further round of betting ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. a further round of betting ensues and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers will have to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where many players can get confused. Unlike Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player must utilize exactly 3 cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the best possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same concept in nearly all poker games.
The low hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.
While it seems difficult at first, following a few rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic nuances of the game with ease. Since you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an overwhelming collection of betting choices and seeing that you have several individuals battling for the high hand, and many shooting for the low. If you like a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha/8.
